Playing up in Rec Baseball
by posted 02/17/2018

MTBSA Members,

In 2016, at our March monthly board meeting, we voted to allow baseball players (ages 6, 8 and 10) to play up a division based on their school age.  This means if your player was born between 5/1 and 9/1 we will allow them to play up a division.  This will allow kids to play with kids they will be competing with and against in school.  We came to this decision based on request from our members and reviewing other programs in our surrounding area.  Although we are allowing it, we are not encouraging parents to move their child up just based them falling into this age bucket.  Parents need to remember this means there 8 year old son could be facing some of our best 10 year old pitching.  There 6 year old, with one season of tball will be playing in our new combined 7-8 year old division.  This division will be using a pitching machine and introduce kid pitch at some point in the season.  It means our best 10 year olds will be playing on a bigger field with a longer fence against some of our best players in the league at Majors.  For some it will be fine.  We just ask you think about your Childs ability and really decide if it is best for their confidence and development.  If you decide to move your child up they will compete to make all star games in that division and compete in the divisions HR derby.  We just want to be clear on the guidelines.  If you want to move up a division you need to notify us by Friday 2/23, 12 noon.  Send an email to baseball@MTBSA and administration@MTBSA .  This is a hard cutoff date as we will be doing drafts that coming weekend.  No play up request will be accepted after this date.

2 years ago we changed some of our divisions which was another reason we decided we would change the play up rule.  For the 2018 season our divisions will be set up as such

TBall  5-6 year old division, Commissioner (Open Position)

Kids will still be hitting off the tee with an introduction to coach pitch.  Games will generally be on Saturdays with practice during the week.  Teams will be balanced with 5 and 6 year olds.

Rookies  7-8 year old division  Chris Pekula, Commissioner

Kids will face a pitching machine.  This division will focus on getting consistent swings from consistent pitching using real baseballs.  We will not keep standings, but have some type of round robin tournament to end the season.  Most games will be played on Saturday at Windlestrae field 3.  Games will be played on a 46'/60' field.  We will ask parents to umpire.  We will form teams based on prior year ratings.  We will do our best to balance between 7 and 8 year olds.

Minors  9-10 year old division  Bruce Jones, Commissioner

This division will be all kid pitch with umpires.  We will keep standings and have end of season playoffs.  Games will be on Saturday's at Windlestrae 1 and during the week at Windlestrae 1 and Windlestrae 3.  Games will be palyed on a 46'/60' field.  Teams are formed via a draft process.

Majors  11-2 year old division  Tony Lauerman, Commissioner

This division will be all kid pitch with umpires.  We will keep standings and have end of season playoffs.  Games will be on Saturday's and weeknights at Windlestrae 4 and Rose Twig 3 on a 50'/70' base field.  Teams are formed via a draft process.

View this email in your browser

2018 Bat Rule Changes

Cal Ripken Baseball Division - All non-wood bats must have USABat Marking. Barrel Maximum 2 5/8". No BBCOR Bats are permitted in the Cal Ripken Division. For T-Ball, bats must be marked with USABat T-Ball Stamp.

Note: Solid one piece wood bats are permitted for use in all divisions and must conform to Rule 1.10. No laminated or experimental bats shall be used in a game.

Tampering or altering bats may violate certain federal and state laws and voids the USA Baseball certification, as well as all manufacturer warranties. Rolling is considered tampering and would void the bat’s certification and make it illegal for play.

Connie Mack Evaluations 2018 Season
by posted 01/21/2018

MTBSA Connie Mack (CM) Parents/Players,

Good afternoon, it’s that time of year again, time for Spring/Summer baseball.  On behalf of myself, (Connie Mack commissioner) and MTBSA Baseball, we’d like to advise you of our upcoming CM evaluations.  If you are a returning player, welcome back. For those of you new to Connie Mack, this is the next step in your child’s baseball path.  The number and composition of our teams is directly related to our registration numbers.   My goal is to have selected our teams NLT Friday April 13th.

As usual, we will be looking for coaches for these teams as well as evaluators for our workouts.  If we have coaches prior to evaluations it helps enormously in player placement and ensuring we have the correct mix. If you are interested in volunteering, please let myself or Mike Simpson (baseball@mtbsa.org) know.  Lastly, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call me @ (267) 250-2571 cell.

Evaluations will be for all players aged 13 to 16.  All our tryouts this year will be outdoors:

Saturday, 24 March Windlestrae Field #2 (WS #2) (time to be announced)

Sunday, 25 March WS #2 (TBA)

Saturday, 07 April WS #2 (TBA)

Sunday, 08 April WS #2 (TBA)

Back-up dates:  Saturday/Sunday 14/15 April.

Please arrive 15 minutes early for check-in.

New 2018 USA Baseball Bat Regulations
by posted 09/01/2017

In the Spring we advised our members about the new bat regulations starting 1/1/2018.  As of January 1, 2018 all youth baseball leagues are requiring players to use bats with the USA baseball stamp.  Below is a link from Dick's explaining the new standard in more detail.

This change applies to baseball only.  It does not affect softball.

What this means for our MTBSA families is:

A. All MTBSA baseball players (not including the Connie Mack division) must use a bat with the new USA Baseball label on it.  Bats following the USABat standard are available for sale as of September 1, 2017.  To identify officially-sanctioned youth bats, look for the "USA Baseball" licensing mark, located on the taper.

B. Regarding T-ball players, the USA Baseball Tee Ball Sticker Program is an initiative designed to allow for the continued use of T-ball bats that were manufactured prior to the implementation of the new USABat standard. This program will allow individuals and families to purchase approved stickers marked with the USA Baseball logo and language which reads: ONLY FOR USE WITH APPROVED TEE BALLS. Stickers will be available for purchase online via USABaseballShop.com beginning September 1, 2017.

The bats that were used this past year will not be allowed to be used after 1/1/2018 (with the exception of T-ball which will require the new sticker)

This is a great time to take advantage of the 20% coupon for Dick's on September 16 to purchase a new bat (and maybe tuck it away for Santa to give).

There are several websites online if you want to research this more.  Below is a great link or you can Google new USA bat standard 2018.
